Little Book Club FAQ
Have you heard about the Little Book Club craze? It is spreading throughout Cincinnati and Chicago as our youngest learners and their caregivers are flocking to classes, ready to engage with books, crafts, sensory bins, and of course, new friends! Wondering what LBC is all about? Let us help answer some frequently asked questions.
Who teaches Little Book Club?
Our Little Book Club teachers have a mix of teaching licenses, specialty degrees, and experiences. Most importantly, they are all passionate educators who are eager to create a safe and welcoming environment for children to read, learn, and play.
How is LBC different than story time at the library?
Great question! First off, we want to be abundantly clear—we are HUGE fans of our public libraries and huge fans of story time. However, there are a few importance differences between library story time and LBC.
LBC is taught by teachers with literacy and education background who can add valuable instruction in an age appropriate way.
LBC keeps class size small. The large number of children attending library story time isn’t ideal for all children.
Smaller classes means more opportunities for instruction and interactive learning. There is also time to get a little messy and create!
Many of our LBC families sign up for an entire session. This means class will be the same children, same care-givers, and same instructor each week which leads to new friends—for children and caregivers!—as well as a trusted relationship between children and the instructor.
Does a caregiver need to attend?
We offer classes for children & a caregiver as well as classes that are only for children. You can see the individual description of each class to know whether or not a caregiver is required.
Can a sibling come, too?
Younger siblings are welcome to attend LBC; however, if they fall within the age range of the class, they do need to register in order to attend.
What are the goals of LBC?
Little Book Club aims for children to:
cultivate a lifelong love for reading
to learn through play
develop valuable interpersonal skills through socializing with other children
Little Book Club also aims for adults to learn a thing or two! Our classes are designed to give caregivers easy ideas to integrate literacy into daily life.
What can I expect during a LBC class?
Each class includes a delightful read aloud, interactivity literacy activities, book-themed craft, and a sensory play bin. During class, we encourage students to interact and engage with others to incorporate socialization and language skills, as we explore literacy.
Students do use (washable) art supplies of all sorts, so be prepared to get a little messy. Our sensory bins are highly supervised, so no need to worry about any hazards during class.
What is the difference between Baby Book Club and Little Book Club?
Baby Book Club is a special class currently offered in Chicago. Baby Book Club builds on Little Book Club’s mission to nurture the love of learning right from the start. Each class consists of themed read alouds, songs, and individual or group sensory activities that aim to promote baby language, development, and socialization.
What if we sign up but have to miss a class?
We don't currently offer refunds for a missed class, but we'll be happy to set you up with a makeup class at another day or time that works with you. Always feel free to reach out to your instructor, who will help determine what's best based on the individual situation.
